Soon, WhatsApp users will be able to add contacts from any connected device.

WhatsApp declared a new feature that allows users to save contacts within the app. This means that even if you lose your phone or transfer your host number to a new device, all your contacts will be saved in WhatsApp’s cloud storage.

Until now, WhatsApp used the address book on your phone to sync contacts. If you wish to save messages received from new friends via the app, the details will be saved locally on your smartphone.

Thanks to a new feature coming soon, you can keep your contacts on any platform, including Windows and the web version of WhatsApp. You can also choose to sync contacts stored on WhatsApp to your phone.

The company last year started allowing users to access two WhatsApp accounts on their smartphones. If you want to keep personal and business contacts separate, it may be useful to save contacts connected to a single WhatsApp account. Additionally, if you share your device with others, you can associate your contact list with your number.

WhatsApp said it created Identity Proof Link Storage (IPLS), a new encrypted storage technology, to facilitate secure contact storage. When a user saves a contact, the technology creates an encryption key on the smartphone. The client must verify its primary device identifier to retrieve it.

To sign any modifications to user directory encryption properties, the app also partners with Cloudflare. According to Meta, this process ensures that contact information saved in WhatsApp is not altered.

According to the company, the technology underlying the contact storage feature will be able to save contacts by logging in.

“Usernames on WhatsApp will add an extra level of privacy so you don’t have to reveal your phone number when messaging someone,” the company said in a blog post.
